Numeric Spatial Memory Test (Chimpanzee Challenge)
Numbers from 1 upwards flash on a grid for 210 milliseconds, about a fifth of a second, and are then covered by white squares. Click the squares in order: where the 1 was, then the 2, and so on.
It starts with 3 numbers. Get a round right and the next has one more; get it wrong and you see where they were and try that length again. Three missed rounds in a row end the test. Your score is the most numbers you put in order.
The task is from Kyoto University's work with chimpanzees (Inoue & Matsuzawa, 2007). The young chimpanzee Ayumu got about 80% of five-number trials right at 210 ms; nine university students tested the same way managed 20–40%.
Keep your eyes on the middle of the grid before you press Show. A mouse, trackpad or touch screen all work.
Almost done!
Two optional questions, asked once: your age and sex let the results be broken down by who took the test.
Sex as at birth; gender as you identify. Languages you grew up speaking; several are fine, separated by commas. Leave blank anything you would rather not say.
