SAFRAN Reasoning Test
54 questions · 15 minutes
Verbal, numerical and figural reasoning
Six kinds of question take turns, getting harder as you go. Work fast, and answer every question: if you are not sure, guess. A wrong answer costs nothing, and few people reach the end in the time. Your score is the number right. One of each kind:
- Odd one out. Three of four words belong together; pick the one that does not. paperclip, pencil, fineliner, pen: the answer is paperclip, the only one you cannot write with.
- Figure analogies. Pick the picture that goes with the third as the second goes with the first.
The circle is turned 45°, so the hourglass is turned 45° as well:
- Number series. Type the next number. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ?: the answer is 12.
- Word analogies. “Visual impairment” is to “glasses” as “tiredness” is to …? Glasses help against poor sight, so the answer is what helps against tiredness: sleep.
- Matrices. Pick the picture that completes the pattern.
Each row has one kind of shape, and the columns hold one, two (stacked) and three (side by side): three triangles side by side.
- Word problems. Type the answer as a number. A $500 article is $15 off. What does it cost? 485.
Decimals are fine (12.5 or 12,5). No calculator or paper, please: the norms are of people without them.
SAFRAN is by Mussel, Schäpers, Schulte, Hewig and Krumm (Intelligence, 2025), published free for any use. Your percentile is against the authors' online sample of young German adults (16–30), weighted to match the German population's school qualifications. No IQ is given: the sample covers ages 16–30 only. They took the test in German; the English version is the authors' translation.
54 Aufgaben · 15 Minuten
Gegen Sehschwäche hilft eine Brille, gesucht ist also, was gegen Müdigkeit hilft: Schlaf.
- Matrizen.
- Rechenaufgaben. Tippen Sie die Antwort als Zahl ein. Ein Artikel für 500 € ist 15 € reduziert. Was kostet er? 485.

Two optional questions, asked once: your age and sex let the results be broken down by who took the test.
Sex as at birth; gender as you identify. Languages you grew up speaking; several are fine, separated by commas. Leave blank anything you would rather not say.
